SWIMMING Irish Age Group Championships Day 3

The final day of the Swim Ireland National Age Group Championships took place at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin today. Roscommon swimmer Sarah Kelly swimming for Comans SC continued her fine form from yesterday taking the first gold of this evenings session in the girls 11/12 400m Individual Medley event in a time of 5:21.29. The girls from Galway had a clean sweep in the girls 13 years old event with Ruth Keogh (5:31.75), Fiona Staunton (5:43.09) and Katie McKnight (5:43.14) taking first, second and third place respectively.


In the boys 1500m event Swilly Seals SC Leon Vaughan (19:50.64) took gold in the 11/12 year olds event, while Eoghan Grady (17:50.51) of Castlebar SC touched in first for the 13 year olds. Jack Cobain won the boys 15 years old 200m Backstroke event, the Portmarnock based swimmer took gold in a time of 2:14.56 ahead of Cian Duffy (2:18.61) Galway SC and Darren O'Dowling (2:19.86) Dolphin SC. In the girls 14 years old event Kilkenny swimmer Jane Roberts (2:25.90) placed first ahead of Shona Keaveney (2:27.70) Sligo SC and Dayna Clegg (2:30.22) Templeogue SC.


In the penultimate event of the competition, the boys and girls 200m Freestyle event, Conor Turner Aer Lingus SC and Curtis Coulter of Ards SC gave an exciting show in the boys 15 years old event with Coulter eventually touching in first in a time of 1:58.46 while Turner took the silver medal in 1:59.59. In the girls 13 years old race Bangors Mary Kate McDowell (2:14.48) took gold ahead of Ciara McNevin (2:16.41) Longford SC and Jenny Drennan (2:17.37) Bangor SC.
