BOXING AIBA World Youth Championships

29 Apr 2010

Michael O'Reilly cruised into the last 16 of the AIBA World Youth Championships after producing a superb performance to beat Cuban lightweight and current World Junior and Intercontinental champion Yunior Boleri in Baku, Azerbaijan.

O'Reilly, from the Portlaoise BC, beat the Cuban 11-3 after three, three minute rounds and will now face Mitchell Buckland of Wales tomorrow with a place in the quarter finals up for grabs.

Ryan Burnett, of the Holy Family club in Belfast, also had his hand raised in triumph following a 3-1 decision over Italian light flyweight Manuel Fabrizio.

But Chris Phelan bowed out at the last 32 stage despite a brave showing against home favourite Shaban Shahpalangov.

O'Reilly, Burnett, Chris Blaney and AIBA World Junior champion Joe Ward will all be involved in last 16 bouts tomorrow just two wins away from the semi finals and securing at least bronze.

Boxers reaching the last four in Baku will qualify for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.
