BOXING Elite National Championships

25 Feb 2010

Ken Egan has insisted that he'll be taking nothing for granted in Friday's Elite Men's Championships semi final with Denis Hogan at the National Stadium in Dublin.Egan and Hogan renew acquaintances in one of nine men's and one women's last four duels at the home of Irish boxing on Friday evening.

The Neilstown southpaw , who is targeting an historic tenth Irish title in a row, meets the former Intermediate champ in a repeat of the 2009 light heavyweight semi final which Egan won 16-3.Egan also beat Hogan 12-1 at the Stadium in a box-off to help with the selection process for the Irish team for the World Senior Championships last summer.Despite emerging victorious from their previous two meetings however, Egan, a silver medal winner at the 2008 Olympics, says that there is no way that he will be complacent.

He said: "I'll be sticking to my boxing against Denis. The plan is to get the lead and to keep building up my score, to keep scoring and moving. Our last two meetings are history now and I won't even be thinking about those wins. "I know I can't afford to be complacent in there against Denis. I'm going for ten Irish titles in a row and the last thing I'll be doing is taking anything for granted on Friday night."

Meanwhile, Belfast's Tommy McCarthy, who Egan beat in the 2009 final, faces Michael Ward in Saturday's corresponding semi final. defending light welter champ Philip Sutcliffe trades leather with World Youth champ Ray Moylette on Friday. Current lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight champions Eric Donovan, Darren O'Neill and Con Sheehan will also be in action on Friday.

EUgold medalist David Oliver Joyce, of the St Michael's Athy will be between the ropes on Saturday for an eagerly anticipated last four showdown with Ross Hickey, a bronze medalist for the 2008European Senior Championships.

Saturday's semi finals will also see Beijing Olympian and 2008 European Championships bronze medalist John Joe Joyce meet 2007 EU champ Roy Sheahan in an all St Michael's Athy 69Kg clash.

The winner will advance toface either defending welterweight champion Willie McLaughlin or Adam Nolan in the 69Kg final. European Youth champion Jason Quigley meets European Senior Championships bronze medalist Eamon O'Kane in Saturday's middleweight decider.
