SWIMMING Junior Swimming Star McMahon continues record breaking form at National Aquatic Centre

Swimming's Irish Short Course Nationals continued today at the National Aquatic Centre with another exciting day of competition.

After setting a new junior record in the 400m freestyle yesterday 14 year old swimming sensation Sycerika McMahon set a new Irish senior record and 3 new junior records today. Swimming in the 200m breaststroke McMahon of Leander SC smashed the junior record set by Fiona Doyle in 2008 and took .12 seconds of the senior record held by Ciara Farrell. McMahon then went on to break another Irish Junior record in the 100m Individual Medley breaking Grainne Murphy's time set at the 2008 European SC Championships and setting a new standard of 1.04.55. Just ten minutes later competing in the final of the 50m Breaststroke McMahon set her third Irish junior record of the day taking the silver medal in a time of 31.88, just .03 seconds behind Ashleigh Hyland of Bangor SC who took gold.

15 year old Shauna O'Brien of Waterford Crystal Swimming Club also set a new Irish Junior record in the women's 50m Butterfly today, Shauna beat off Olympian Aisling Cooney (28.11) to take first place in a time of 28.08 seconds, third place went to Niamh McDonnell (28.36) of Aer Lingus SC.

In the men's event of the 50m Butterfly, Steven McQuillan of Ards SC, who will compete at the European Short Course Championships in Istanbul in December, took gold in a time of 25.13 seconds, ahead of Paul Laffin (25.83) of Sunday's Well SC and Eoin Gray (26.22) of Trojan SC. The men's and women's 1500m finals also took place today. In the women's event Donna Marie O'Prey of Larne SC took gold in a time of 17.18.19, Brendan Gibbons of Athlone SC took gold in the men's event in a time of 16.25.68.

The competition continues tomorrow Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November.
