MOUNTAINEERING Irish National Lead Climbing Competition

08 Oct 2009

The stars of the Irish climbing community will be out in force this Saturday in Dingle, Co. Kerry when Irelands National Lead Climbing Competition takes place. Competition climbing of this type requires competitors to attempt routes of increasing difficulty, with the winners being those climbers who reach the highest point on the hardest route.

This competition is the first National lead climbing competition in a number of years, and it is hoped to become an annual event. Irelands top climbers will compete on the 'arm exhaustingly' steep overhanging walls of the Play At Height Climbing Centre in Dingle. Up and coming youth climbers, including those who recently represented Ireland in the European Youth Series, will compete alongside some of the amazingly experienced male and female climbers from Ireland and abroad.

Competitors will climb two qualifying routes which are demonstrated. The top 6 climbers in each category will qualify for the finals, which will take place in the afternoon.

Angela Carlin , Mountaineering Ireland Coaching and Talent Identification Officer said "With the recent growth in competitive climbing , and Ireland having being represented in recent European youth competitions , we are very pleased to be organising this competition, and we hope that it will mark the beginning of a more formal competitive climbing structure in Ireland."

Spectators are more than welcome on the day and all results and videos will be online at www.playatheight.com .
