BOXING Taylor Retains European Title

21 Sep 2009

Katie Taylor registered her 38th win in a row to capture her fourth European title on the trot in the Ukraine.

The 23 year old Irish woman - who didn't concede a single point in her three bouts in the Championships - beat Meryem Aslan Zeybek of Turkey 11-0 in the lightweight final at the Nadezhda Sports Complex in Nikalaev City.

Scores at the end of each of the four rounds (4-0, 7-0, 9-0) (11-0).

Speaking after the final, Irish team manager Sadie Duddy said that Taylor boxed superbly, while Taylor's coach Peter and fellow Irish coach Pat Ryan were full or praise for the Irish lightweight.

Taylor has now won 63 of her last 64 international bouts.

The reigning World and AIBA 2008 World female boxer of the year won her first European title in Norway in 2005 and followed that up with gold medal wins at the European Championships in Poland and Denmark in 2006 and 2007.

Taylor, who scored 23 points in total in the Ukraine, received a bye into the quarter finals.

Sinead Kavanagh also performed very well at her first major Championships. The Drimnagh middleweight was edged out by Polish fighter Lidia Fidura in the last 16.
