BOXING European Women's Championships - Kavanagh Bows

Irish middleweight Sinead Kavanagh is out of the Women's European Championships despite a brave performance in Nikalaev City in the Ukraine this afternoon.

The Irish woman, boxing for the first time in a major international tournament, lost her last 16 showdown with Lidia Fidura of Poland 3-2 at the Nadezhda Sports Complex.

Kavanagh, of the Drimnagh BC, was 1-0 up at the end of first round of this contest, and 2-1 ahead after the second.

But Fudura levelled in the fourth and final round before securing a narrow victory.

Meanwhile, World and European lightweight champion, Katie Taylor will be involved in quarter final action tomorrow afternoon.

The 23 year old Bray woman, who is looking to win her fourth European title in a row, meets Kosovare Buzuku of Sweden who beat Poland's Karolin Grzczyk today.

Women's senior bouts are fought over four, two minute rounds as opposed to men's senior bouts which are fought over three, three minute rounds.
