06 Sep 2009

John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neill both recorded impressive wins at the AIBA World Championships in Milan tonight.

But Paddy Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, is out of the tournament, despite a fiery display at the Mediolanum Forum.
Nevin, produced another slick performance to see off the challenge of Serbian bantamweight Nikola Magovac.

Both boxers shared the first round 1-1 but Nevin turned on the style and took the second 7-3 before running out a 14-3 winner, courtesy of some wonderful shots near the latter end of both frames.

O'Neill was equally as impressive, opening up a 9-1 advantage in the first round versus Croatian middleweight Stipcia Brekala.
The Kilkenny man, who qualified as a school teacher this summer, also dominated the final two rounds en roure an impressive 19-3 decision.

However, light flyweight Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, lost 15-4 to Peter Munkia of Kenya.

Munkai was 6-2 up at the end of the first round and 12- 4 up at the end of the second before addding another three points to his total in the third and final round.

Barnes, who made most of the running throughout the three-rounder, forced Munkai into standing eight counts in the second and third rounds.
