The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month June 2024: Ciara Mageean (Athletics)
The winner of The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month for June 2024 is Ciara Mageean.
The European Athletics Championships last month provided what Irish Times’ Ian O'Riordan reported from Rome as 'a golden 48 hours for Irish athletics,' and so produces the second monthly athletics winner of the year.
Ciara Mageean won the women's 1500m, producing a masterpiece of tactical middle distance running to win in 4:04.66, joining the mixed 4x400m relay team of Chris O’Donnell, Rhasidat Adeleke, Thomas Barr and Sharlene Mawdsley as a fellow gold medal winner for Ireland.
Now based in Manchester with the New Balance training group, the Portaferry woman also boasts a European Indoor bronze from Glasgow in 2019, a Commonwealth Games silver for Northern Ireland from 2022, and a World Under-20 Championships silver from back in 2010 – all over the 1,500m distance, making her the second most decorated Irish distance runner of all time behind Sonia O’Sullivan.
Congratulations to Ciara Mageean our Sportswoman of the Month for June.
