Tributes paid to former board member Bernard Allen
Sport Ireland is saddened by the passing of Bernard Allen, a former member of the board of Sport Ireland.
Mr Allen served on the board of Sport Ireland from 2011-2019. He was also an active serving member of our Audit and Risk Committee and previously held the role of Chair of the Grants Committee.
Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May said: “During his tenure, Bernard demonstrated great commitment, outstanding leadership, and a profound sense of integrity. His efforts played an important part in helping to shape the direction and success of Sport Ireland.
“Beyond his many accomplishments, Bernard was a respected colleague and a good friend to many in Sport Ireland. We extend our condolences to Bernard’s family, friends, and all who are mourning his loss. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
First elected to Dáil Éireann for Fine Gael in 1981, Mr Allen retained his Cork North Central TD seat at each subsequent general election until his retirement in 2011.
A front bench spokesperson for Health, Social Welfare, Environment and Local Government, Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sport and Recreation, he was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Education and the Environment with special responsibility for Youth and Sport.
Mr Allen was Lord Mayor of Cork City 1988 - 1989 and was a member of Pitch and Putt Ireland, Bol Chumann na hEireann, Golfing Union of Ireland, GAA and FAI.
Mr Allen is survived by his wife Marie and their children, Lorraine, Audrey and Deirdre.
