Sustainability

Sustainability in sport refers to the concept of integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into the planning, implementation, and operation of sporting events, facilities, and practices.

Sport Ireland is the statutory authority which oversees and funds the development of sport and physical activity in Ireland. It is the state agency for over 100 sports organisations including 65 NGBs, 10 other funded bodies and 29 LSPs.

The Sport Ireland Campus provides state-of-the-art sports facilities to elite athletes in Ireland, offers valuable amenities to the local community, and is also on over 500 acres of walking and running routes, forest paths, outdoor fitness equipment, and open spaces which can be enjoyed by all.

Sport Ireland's aim is to become a role model for national organisations in Ireland, working hard to meet internal and Government targets and to be a leader in sustainable development across the public sector. Sport Ireland's ambitions in this area may be modified as it continues on its sustainability journey as an organisation.

By integrating sustainability principles into operations, activities and events, the sports sector can play a significant role in promoting environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic resilience.

Future Sustainability on Campus

Sport Ireland’s 2023-2027 Statement of Strategy calls sustainability out as an enabler, committing to improving the monitoring/evaluation of its own sustainability impact and outcomes ‘on the ground’ and working with core partners around the wider sport sector in general via research and improved use of data management and insight.
