24 Aug 2009

Jason Quigley was crowned European Youth welterweight champion in Szezecin, Poland. The Finn Valley Donegal clubman beat Emil Ahmadov of Azerbaijan 6-1 over four, two minute rounds to finish on top of the podium in this afternoons 69Kg final. And in a double celebration for the new champion he also scooped the best technical boxer of the tournament award. Scores at the end of the first three rounds (1-0, 2-0, 4-0) (6-1).

Speaking after today's win, his fifth victory in six days, the 18 year old orthodox punching Irish Intermediate and Youth champion, who has seven Irish titles to his name, said that it was a proud moment to see the Irish flag being raised. He said: "It was a tough week and I had to keep my concentration in all my bouts. It was a very proud moment for me to hear the Irish national anthem being played and to see our flag being raised was really special."

Quigley actually secured gold after claiming wins in two countries as his last 32 victory over Joni Polishsuk of Finland was in Schwedt, Germany where some of the preliminary round contests were held last Sunday. However, his next four victories were in Szezecin, Poland. Irish coaches Jim Moore and Jimmy Payne were full of praise for the Ulster teenager.

Jim Moore said: "Jason dominated today's final and the scoring speaks for itself. It was a fantastic performance all round from Jason, not only today, but throughout what has been a very competitive week for the entire Irish squad."

Russia won four gold and two silver medals from eleven finals today. Ireland, England and Germany, who were in a training camp at the National Stadium in Dublin last month, won one gold each.
