Yvonne Randell Wins Singles Gold At The European Seniors Bowling Championships In Helsinki
There have been some terrific achievements by Ireland's youth bowlers over the past 12 months, and it has clearly inspired some of our senior bowlers, no more so than Yvonne Randell, who made history last week by winning Ireland's first ever European Seniors Championships gold medal at this year's tournament in Finland.
Yvonne put together a magnificent six-game series of 1169 in Tali Bowl, Helsinki, a scratch average of
195, to hold off two Finnish bowlers, Paula Eriksson and Kaija Vaha-Lummukka, to take her place on the top of the podium for Women's Group C.
Yvonne finished particularly strongly, ensuring she took the gold medal, with games of 210 and 243 to finish her series. Her final game of 243 was the highest game by any bowler in her group.
Her performance in the tournament as a whole saw her qualify for the Round Robin Masters final from a strong field of 92 top senior bowlers. She eventually finished 6th overall in the tournament, a truly magnificent achievement.
Tali Bowl, a state-of-the-art 36-lane centre, has hosted some big events since it was opened in 1973, including European Championships and World Championships in 1977 and 1987 respectively, as well as the European Youth Championships (EYC) in 2008 and the World Youth Championships (WYC) in 2010. It is widely acknowledged as one of the top centres in European bowling.
Congratulations to Yvonne on a brilliant performance in a top European Event.
