Walsh & Meehan Secure Sprint Bronze Medal at Paracycling Track World Championships

15 Feb 2012

Catherine Walsh and Francine Meehan capped off a very successful Paracycling Track World Championships for the Irish team in LA by taking the bronze medal in the Women's Match Sprint competition.

Walsh and Meehan set a new Irish record of 12.259 in qualifying to secure fourth place and a medal ride off. The Irish duo were out-foxed by a strong GB team in their semi-final ride-off but Walsh and Meehan got tactics spot on for the Bronze medal ride-off against Germany.

The Irish team returns home from the Paracycling Track World Championships with two gold medals, two world champions - Catherine Walsh/Francine Meehan & Colin Lynch, a silver and a bronze.

Ireland finished in 7th place in the medal table out of 31 countries - the best ever performance by and Irish squad at a Track World Championships. Ireland's final country ranking points total for the London 2012 Paralympic Games will be known in two weeks time and this will determine the number of Irish Paracyclists competing at the Games this summer.

Also competing on the final day of the Championships were Andrew Fitzgerald and Con Collis in the Men's Match Sprints. The Male tandem pairing finished 17th with a time of 11.361. The Irish Team Sprint squad of Colin Lynch, Enda Smyth and Cathal Miller set a new Irish record time of 56.840 to finish in 11th place.
