Two new board members appointed to Sport Ireland

The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, and the Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne, have today announced the appointment of two new members to the Board of Sport Ireland. 

The new appointees are:

• Deirdre Mongan, who is appointed to fill a disability advocate position
• Kevin Hoy, who is appointed to fill a legal position

Deirdre Mongan is an experienced Paralympic athlete with extensive international and high performance experience. She represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and has achieved medal success in European and World Championships. Deirdre is a Research Officer with the Health Research Board and is actively involved in leadership roles in disability sport as well as being a player and coach at grassroots level. 

Kevin Hoy is an experienced solicitor and was a partner with Mason, Hayes & Curran for more than 20 years. In 2020 he became a consultant, focusing on executive coaching and talent development within the firm. Kevin has been involved with sport in a voluntary capacity for many years and is also active in the wider voluntary sector.

Commenting on the appointments, Minister Martin said:

“I am delighted that Deirdre and Kevin have agreed to join the Board of Sport Ireland. Their wide experience and skills will be hugely beneficial to Sport Ireland and its ongoing work in the development of Irish sport over the coming years.”

Minister Byrne said:

“I want to congratulate Deirdre and Kevin on their appointments and I wish them well for their terms on the Board. They are filling important positions on the Board and I have no doubt that their experience will add enormous value to Sport Ireland’s work for Irish sport.”

The appointment follows a public call for applications on the State Boards website and an assessment process managed by the Public Appointments Service.
