Trinity win Senior Eight as Metro regatta finally takes place over June Bank Holiday

09 Jun 2011

Trinity's Intermediate men's crew came out on top in the Division 1 men's eight, with a convincing win over Neptune in the two boat final at the re-scheduled Metro regatta at Blessington last Saturday.

The Metro, which is the third in a series of four Grand League regattas, had been postponed the previous week due to strong winds. The large entry for the original date was somewhat depleted by the number of crews who decided to compete in the London Metro regatta. Despite this, competition on the lake waters in Blessington remained tough.

In other races, the men's double scull final saw Castleconnell cross the line just over six seconds ahead of their Skibbereen rivals, with the Bann crew following less than one length behind. These top three crews were all powered by junior athletes. The Division One men's pair entry suffered with the change of regatta date, with UCD, Commercial and UL crews not racing on the day. St. Michael's took a one length win over Trinity, with Commercial crossing the line two lengths behind the victorious Limerick crew.

Killorglin's Monika Dukarska found herself up against Skibbereen scullers in the women's single but crossed the line ahead of the other four boats to take the Division One title. UCD women's senior eight opted to stay on Irish waters, winning the women's Division One category over Bann's junior crew.

The re-scheduling of the Metro regatta means that trials for the Home International regatta with now take place at the final Grand League regatta at the National Rowing Centre in Cork on July 3.
