TRIATHLON Ireland’s Emma Davis finishes 15th at Triathlon World Championships securing Olympic qualification (subject to official confirmation)
Ireland’s leading triathlete; Bangor born Emma Davis finished an impressive 15th at the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Vancouver, yesterday (8th June 2008). Davis’ performance represents the best ever finish by an Irish triathlete at World Championship level, in, remarkably, the twenty-two year old’s first World Championships.
Over eight races this season Davis, who is supported under the Irish Sports Council’s International Carding Scheme, has performed consistently well to climb up the world rankings. i Her best result came in the World Cup in Richards Bay, South Africa where she finished an impressive ninth. ITU Director Libby Burrell recently described her rise this season as ‘meteoric’, following an injury plagued season last year.
Yesterday’s race was run in testing conditions with air temperatures of 14 degrees, and water temperatures of just 11 degrees. Many athletes were feeling the effects of the cold, including Davis, who when asked to describe the race responded; ‘cold is the only way to describe it!’
Ends.
