Top High Performance Coaches Have Their Say

28 Feb 2011
On February 3rd and 4th a number of Ireland's top high performance coaches participated in a high performance coach development workshop as part of the Irish Institute of Sport's Pursuit of Excellence programme. Central to the success of the workshop series is ongoing feedback provided by the coaches after each event. Coaches in attendance rated the workshop content at 96% when asked about its relevant to their coaching role.

February 4th 2011 - Teresa McDaid, High Performance Coach, Athletics Ireland leading a group discussion.

In addition to the relevance of the workshop content, 89% of coaches stated that the content of the workshop was pitched appropriately. Ross Killian, High Performance Coach, Irish Sailing commented 'Good day overall that went very fast. The coaching philosophies provided by other coaches were really interesting' .In contrast to the positive feedback areas, coaches also highlighted the need for more breaks in between the workshop activities. Fran Ronan, High Performance Coach, Swim Ireland 'A lot of information given, its maybe important to look at the time management element of the workshop, considering the concentration demands of the workshop content . But still excellent.' Coaches also highlighted the need to maintain the momentum of learning and development in between the workshop events. As a result a series of learning groups have been established to continue the learning outside the workshop framework

Commenting on the importance of participant feedback, Daragh Sheridan, Programme Manager stated 'Continuous improvement is a critical focus in the Institute of Sport. Without high quality feedback from our high performance coaches, we would not be able to grow and develop our workshop series to the standards required. We very much look forward to acting on the advice and feedback from our coaches whilst we prepare for our next workshop event on April 14th.'

The next Pursuit of Excellence workshop will place on April 14th - 15th. The workshop will focus on how coaches effectively integrate sport science and medicine expertise into their key coaching activities.
