The Two Rs

21 Jun 2011

There are two golden rules in managing volunteers in your club:

  • Recruit the right people for the right job
  • Retain them by providing good support in the form of written material, access to training and development, support from others within the club and recognition for their contribution

Volunteer administrators, officials, coaches and helpers are pivotal to the successful running of clubs and their dedication is worthy of considerable recognition. However volunteers are often over-burdened, asked to do the wrong job, not given the support or training they need to perform, or not always given the recognition that they deserve.

For the sports club, it is important to recognize that recruitment and retention are two distinct processes underpinned by different motivational objectives for the volunteer. Sports clubs need to invest in both to retain this unpaid workforce. Investment in volunteer development reduces the need for large-scale recruitment drives that do not necessarily result in quality experiences for participants. In the absence of such investment sports clubs may struggle to retain volunteers.

These guidelines are designed to help in recruiting, managing, supporting and retaining your club's volunteers.
