The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman Award for August: Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh
The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman Award for August: Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh (Gaelic football)
Ever since she made her debut for Kerry at the age of 16 in 2008, Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh had to carry the tag of 'one of the greatest footballers never to win an All Ireland'. But in August she was finally free of that label when her county beat Galway to win the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 1993.
It was a richly deserved winner's medal for Ní Mhuircheartaigh who is regarded as one of the finest players to have ever played the game, her five points in 11 first half minutes sending Kerry on their way to a record 12th title.
* Róisín Ní Riain had already won our April award, so because each sportswoman can only win one monthly award through the year, she was out of the running for August.
Previous monthly winners - December: Fionnuala McCormack; January: Lucy Mulhall; February: Mona McSharry; March: Rachael Blackmore; April: Róisín Ní Riain; May: Rhasidat Adeleke; June: Ciara Mageean; July: Kellie Harrington.
