The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month award for May 2024 goes to Rhasidat Adeleke
Even before she took part in the World Athletics Relays in early May, it had already been an outstanding season for Rhasidat Adeleke, but her performances for the Irish 4x400m women's and mixed relay teams in the Bahamas were on another level. The 21-year-old led both teams to Olympic qualification, bronze medals and new Irish records, her split time of 48.45 seconds in the mixed relay final the fastest ever recorded at the event.
To Friday evening, June 7th then and Adeleke, as part of the Irish quartet for the 4x400m mixed relay, put in a blistering second leg performance to win gold alongside Chris O'Donnell, Sharlene Mawdsley and Thomas Barr at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. Only Sonia O’Sullivan has ever won a gold medal for Ireland in the European Athletics Championships before this.
Congratulations to Rhasidat Adeleke, our May Sportswoman of the Month. We can’t help but look forward to what Rhasidat and Team Ireland may achieve in Paris later this summer and to cheering them all on.
