Sycerika McMahon win's European Silver

Irish swimming's newest starlet Sycerika McMahon has won her first European Senior medal on the final day of competition at the European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. McMahon put in the swim of her life to win Silver in the 50m Breaststroke Final in a time of 31.27, just missing out on gold by.02 of a second. The race was won by the Cezch Republic's Petra Chocova in 31.25.


Seventeen year old McMahon set a new Irish Senior Record on the way to winning Silver, the previous record of 31.49 held by herself, was set at the World Swimming Championships in 2011, her first Senior International competition. McMahon has had a seamless transition into the senior swimming ranks, she has already secured Olympic qualification on Tuesday last in the 100m Breaststroke final where she finished 5th.


Speaking after the race, a delighted Peter Banks, Swim Ireland's High Performance Director said "It's been a great week for Irish Swimming, two FINA A standards earlier in the week and then to top it off Sycerika's great performance for the Silver medal today, the team have had a great championship overall"


Also in action today were the Women's 4x100m Medley Relay Team. McMahon along with Melanie Nocher, Bethany Carson and Fiona Doyle swam the heats this morning where they finished 12th overall in a time of 4:13.75.


In what has been an extremely successful championship for Irish swimming, the team have had 4 finalists, 8 semi-finalists, set 3 new Irish Senior Records, had two Olympic qualifications and won a Silver medal.
