SWIMMING Records tumble on Day 3 of the Irish Short Course Nationals

Day three of competition at Swimming's Irish Short Course Nationals continued today at the National Aquatic Centre in Abbotstown. In line with FINA rules and subject to ratification by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, Eoin Nolan of Aer Lingus SC set a new Deaf World Record in the mens 100m Freestlye event. Eoin took 01.39 seconds off the record set by Marko Jansen Van Nieuwenhuizen of South Africa in August 2009. Nolan won silver (100m Freestyle) and bronze (200m Freestyle) in the World Dealympics Games in Taipei in September 2009.

Sycerika McMahon continued her record breaking form today, in the 100m Freestyle, McMahon took gold in a time of 56.10 breaking Aisling Cooney's 2 year old junior record by .60 seconds, she then went on to break Grainne Murphys 200m Individual Medley junior record in a time of 2.16.59. McMahon also took gold in the women's 800m in a time of 9.07.60 ahead of Gillian Gavaghan (09.11.01) ESB SC and Wendy O'Neill (09.12.29) Aer Lingus SC. In the men's 800m Limerick High Performance Centre's Andrew Meegan took gold in a time of 8.14.32.

Aisling Cooney from ESB SC, who is travelling with the Irish Team to the European Short Course Nationals in Istanbul in December was in fine form today setting 2 new Irish Senior Records. In the women's 100m Backstroke, Cooney broke Melanie Nocher's record by .17 seconds to take gold in a time of 1.00.25. She then set her second Irish Senior Record of the day in the 50m Backstroke, breaking her own record in a time of 28.37 seconds.

Also making the records books this evening was Phillip Duffy of St Paul's SC, Duffy set a new Irish Junior Record in the men's 100m Butterfly in a time of 55.48 ahead of Eoin Gray (57.11) of Trojan SC and Simon Treacy (58.24) from Dolphin SC in Cork. In the women's even sisters Niamh and Laura McDonnell took first and second place. Niamh swimming for Aer Lingus SC took gold in a time of 1.01.39 followed by Laura (1.01.97) swimming for Cormorant SC and Caroline Dryzaite (1.02.97), from Westwood SC.

Conor Leaney of Ards SC continued his fine form and preparations for the European SC Championships today taking gold in the men's 100m Freestyle event. Leaney also qualified for the final of the 50m Freestyle which will take place tomorrow.

In the relay events, Waterford Crystal took gold in the men's 800m Freestyle (7.40.85), in the boys 400m Freestyle Dublin's Cormorant SC came in, in a time of 4.13.56 to take gold. In the womens 800m Freestyle relay Aer Lingus SC took gold in a time of 8.36.02, the junior girls from Aer Lingus also took gold in the 400m Freestyle relay in a time of 4.29.92.
