SWIMMING Records tumble at the National Aquatic Centre - Day 3

The Irish Open Youth and Senior Championships continued today in the National Aquatic Centre. In the penultimate day of the championships Steven McQuillan was on fine form again breaking a second record. McQuillan broke his own senior 100m Butterfly record in the final in a time of 54.67. The women's 100m Butterfly produced a very exciting final between Laura McDonnell of Comorant SC and Lorna Cummins from Sundays Well with McDonnell just out-touching Cummins by .03 of a second to win in a time of 1.02.32.


Seamus Stacey of NUIM Devils had a comfortable win in the men's 400m Freestyle event in a personal best time of 3.59.03 ahead of Conor Donnelly of Leander SC and Christopher Bryan of Ennis. In the women's event Clare Byrne of Trojan Swimming Club took gold in a time of 4.24.45.


In the women's 200 Backcrawl the junior final was won by Katie Reid of Lisburn Swimming Club in a time of 2.23.54. Chelsea Wilson, Enniskillen SC took gold in the senior women's event in a time of 2.15.76. Niall Wynn of St. Pauls SC took gold in the men's event in a time of 2.09.84.


In the women's 50m Backstroke final Enniskillen's Chelsey Wilson took gold in a time of 30.69. Colm Dowling from Waterford Crystal took gold in the men's event in a time of 26.66


In the 400m Medley relay event the women from Galway Swimming Club took gold in a time of 4.30.32. In the junior event the Aer Lingus team of Katie Byrne Catriona English, Rachel Nevins and Tara English set a new Junior Irish Record in a time of 4.37.05 smashing 3 seconds off the previous record. Ards SC took gold in the men's event in a time of 3.57.11. Trojan SC took gold in the Junior men's event in a time of 4.15.21.


The Irish Open Youth and Senior Championships is also a qualifying event for the European Short Championships in Istanbul in December. Yesterday Steven McQuillan achieved the qualifying time in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 24.49, a new Irish senior record.
