SWIMMING Grainne Murphy Qualifies for World Championships at the Dave McCullagh Memorial Meet

Grainne Murphy qualified for the World Championships with an impressive performance in the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 4:47.94. Grainne is based at the High Performance Centre in Limerick and is the fourth Irish swimmer to qualify, following recent performances from Ryan Harrison, Karl Burdis and Melanie Nocher.

Two athletes achieved the qualifying time for the European Youth Olympic Festival in Finland next July. Leander swimmer Sycerika McMahon swam 4:56.47 in the 400m Individual Medley whilst Conor Turner of Aer Lingus swam 16:33.49 in the 1500m Freestyle.

The 800m Freestyle was easily won by Niamh O'Sullivan in a time of 8:56.96, well ahead of the rest of the field. Donna Marie O'Prey (9:18.44) was second and Niamh Duggan (9:34.03) third.

The final event of the first session was the Men's 400m Individual Medley and was won by Limerick High Performance Centre based swimmer Leo Delaney in a new personal best time of 4:34.83. Second place went to Stephen O'Nolan of Trojan (4.40.91) and third to Edward O'Neill of Aer Lingus (4:44.97)

The competition continues tomorrow and Sunday with many of Ireland's top swimmers hoping to achieve the qualifying times. Swim Ireland are hoping to send its largest team to this years World Championships.
