SWIMMING Final Day at Irish Youth & Senior Championships National Aquatic Centre

The Irish Open Youth and Senior Championships concluded today in the National Aquatic Centre. Notable performances today included a strong victory for Michael Dawson in the final of the 200m Breaststroke who won in a time of 2:21.23. Philip Duffy of St Paul's won the final of the 200m Individual Medley in a time of 2:12.96. In the girls 50m Freestyle final, Niamh Murphy of Templeogue won in 27.10, just ahead of Dairne Ryan of Galway Swim Club (27.30) and Katie Reid of Lisburn City in third (27.61).


In the final event of the weekend an exciting 50m Freestyle final was won by Botond Solymossy of Westwood in 23.37 ahead of Joe Murphy of Waterford (23.74) in second and City of Belfast's Gavin Williamson (23.99) in third. The competition ran very smoothly over the 4 days since Thursday morning with full credit due to Swim Ireland's team of Officials who worked so hard to ensure our National swimming competitions are carried to the highest of standards.


The British Youth & Senior Nationals begin in Sheffield this Tuesday with a 17 strong Irish Squad travelling tomorrow morning hoping for more Irish success at International competition this summer. Swimmer's travelling include Michael Dawson who has just returned from a successful European Junior Championships in Prague, Andrew Meegan and Steven McQuillan who represented their country at the World University Games in Belgrade and Nicholas Quinn and Dan Sweeney who arrived home from Finland where they achieved great success at the European Youth Olympic Festival.


The Irish Open Youth and Senior Championships is also a qualifying event for the European Short Championships in Istanbul in December with Ard's swimmers Michael Dawson and Steven McQuillan achieving the qualifying times this weekend.
