SWIMMING European Youth Olympic Festival

24 Jul 2009

Leander swimmer, Sycerika McMahon has collected yet another medal today at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, Finland, finishing 3rd in the final of the girls 400m Individual Medley in a fantastic new personal best time of 4:53.15 to add to her Silver & Bronze medals won already this week in the 400m Freestyle & 200m Individual Medley respectively. McMahon swam brilliantly in a thrilling final and was unlucky to miss out on 2nd place, being beaten by the smallest of margins by Carlotta Toni of Italy who touched in 4:53.14. Spain’s Cristina Garcia took gold in 4.50.06.

McMahon also competed in the 200m Freestyle this morning and qualified for the B Final following a 2:07.75 in the heats this morning. The decision was taken by the Irish coaching staff to withdraw her from this race in order to best prepare for the 400 IM final, a strategy that ultimately proved very successful.

Speaking from Rome ahead of the World Championships, which commence next Sunday, Swim Ireland National Performance Director Peter Banks hailed McMahon’s achievements as outstanding. “Congratulations to Sycerika and her coach, Bobby Madine, on these fantastic results and medals. There have been great performances all-round by the Irish team and I wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the competition“.
