SWIMMING Burdis Smashes 200m Backstroke National Record

Irish Swimmers were in action again today at the World University Games in Belgrade. Karl Burdis added to his recent sweep of National Irish records this morning in the heats of the men's 200m backstroke to record a time of 2.01.70, winning his heat and smashing 3 ½ seconds off the previous Irish Senior Record mark held by himself. Burdis advanced to this evening's semi-final, where he finished in 2.04.36 and sixteenth place overall.

Dubliner Nuala Murphy had a solid 1500m heat, finishing in a time of 16.53.98, which now qualifiers her as 5th fastest swimmer for tomorrow evening's final.

Melanie Nocher was in action in the 200m freestyle and recorded a personal best time of 2.02.05 in the heats, advancing her to the semi-final where she finished in 2.02.65, 14th place overall.

Meanwhile, the only Irish swimmer competing at the European Junior Championships in Prague today was Ballina native Tara Dunne, who recorded a new personal best time of 4.26.27 in the heats of the 400m freestyle.
