SWIMMING Burdis Continues Record Sweep

Three Irish swimmers were in action today at the World University Games, Belgrade. Nineteen year old Karl Burdis built on his success yesterday by breaking two more Irish records - this time for the 50m backstroke, in his heat (25.71) and his final (25.63). Burdis was unlucky to have finished in 10th place missing out on a place in tomorrow's final by just 2 one hundredths of a second.

Twenty-one year old Melanie Nocher was in action in the 100m backstroke. Her heat time of 1.03.26 this morning progressed her to the semi-final this evening where she produced another solid swim, finishing in 1.03.05 and 12th place overall.

Dublin swimmer Nuala Murphy came within 4 tenths of a second of qualification for the final of the 800m freestyle however had to settle for a 9th place finish following her heats (8.50.50).

Irish swimmers in action tomorrow include Barry Murphy and Ryan Harrison in the men's 100m freestyle and Andrew Meegan in the men's 1500m freestyle.
