Strong Irish Team Named for European Championships in Apeldoorn

14 Oct 2013

This weekend Apeldoorn hosts the 2013 Track Cycling European Championships, where Ireland has entered a strong three person team. The team includes Scratch Race World Champion Martyn Irvine, whose focus will be on the Omnium event, and the Points Race. Caroline Ryan and Eoin Mullen complete the team, which will be competing for three days on the Dutch track.

Irvine and Ryan begin their competition with the Points Race on Friday evening, followed by the two day Omnium event. The Omnium is an event whereby the riders are allocated points for their finishing position in six events, with the winner being the person with the fewest points. Sprint specialist, Mullen, starts his bid on Saturday morning with the Sprint qualifying rounds. Mullen is in the form of his life, having recently broken the course record for the 200m sprint on the track in Aigle. On Sunday the young rider will switch his focus to the Keirin competition.

The European Championships run from the 18th - 20th October in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.
