Step up! How you can join the week of walking celebrations ahead of National Walking Day
By Avice Meya
National Walking Day is almost upon us. So, whether you want to boost your mental or physical health, explore the great outdoors or simply stretch your legs – a great walk is only a step away.
This year, the event is bigger and better than ever before as it forms part of the European Week of Sport, offering a great opportunity to celebrate the many benefits of walking.
National Walking Day, which takes place on Sunday, September 29, celebrates the efforts of community walking volunteers and promotes walking at a local level in communities across Ireland.
Chief Executive of Sport Ireland Dr Úna May said: "National Walking Day 2024 is a great opportunity for everyone to get moving and embrace the many benefits of walking.
“Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out, this week of activities offers something for all. It's the perfect time to take those first steps toward a healthier lifestyle and enjoy our stunning outdoors.
“Walking really is a nationwide movement, and the Irish Sports Monitor 2023 survey again showed recreational walking was the most popular form of physical activity and the proportion of younger people walking for recreation has increased substantially in the past few years.
"I encourage everyone to join that movement - lace up, get involved, and let’s make this year’s National Walking Day the biggest and best yet."
In the run-up to the 5th annual National Walking Day, organised by Get Ireland Walking, the week is packed with different themed walking days. Each day is designed to highlight different aspects of walking and its impact on our health and wellbeing.
Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just looking to add more steps to your daily routine, there is something for everyone.
