Sport Ireland congratulates Aidan Walsh on his Bronze Medal
Aidan secured the bronze medal after a 4-1 win over Mauritian Merven Clair and was scheduled to take on number one seed Pat McCormack from England but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury.
Chairman of Sport Ireland Kieran Mulvey said: “Aidan delivered a patient and controlled fight to secure a medal place and guarantee the first boxing medal for Team Ireland in Tokyo. It is heart-warming to see the support from his team, especially sister Michaela. Aidan and Michaela made history when they become the first brother and sister to box at the same Olympic Games and have supported each other for their entire careers.
Sport Ireland Chief Executive John Treacy added: “Through incredible hard work and dedication Aidan has added his name to the list of medal winning boxers. Aidan has grown and developed in to a world class athlete over recent years. His performance throughout this tournament has been outstanding and we wish him a speedy recovery and return to the ring. On behalf of Sport Ireland I would like to congratulate Aidan and all those involved in Irish boxing”.
