Sport Ireland Campus Awarded Silver Level Smarter Travel Mark

Sport Ireland Campus has been awarded the prestigious Silver Level Smarter Travel Mark by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The award highlights the Sport Ireland Campus' achievements in implementing and promoting sustainable travel practices, including cycling, walking, carpooling, and public transport usage. 

The Smarter Travel Mark is a national recognition scheme designed to acknowledge organisations that demonstrate significant progress in encouraging sustainable travel among their staff and visitors. 

Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May said: “At Sport Ireland, we’re determined to become a leader in addressing our climate change emergency. This award shows our strong commitment to sustainability.  

“We’re very happy to accept this award, and we will continue to develop a sustainable Campus that delivers on our sustainability development goals, responsibilities, and climate action targets. 

“All our staff deserve great credit for their work in championing the importance and value of sustainable travel initiatives.” 

To help secure the award Sport Ireland Campus put in place measures that included:  

  • Installation of cycle repair stands across the Campus. 
  • Availability of umbrellas for Sport Ireland Facilities (SIF) staff use at the National Aquatic Centre and National Indoor Arena reception areas. 
  • Ongoing development of communications plan on active travel promotion for SIF staff. 
  • Ongoing development of a carpooling initiative for SIF staff. 

Other sustainable travel initiatives already on site include:  

  • Facilities for staff (changing rooms, dry rooms, and showers) 
  • Bike parking facilities (secure, sheltered, and open) 
  • Free bike rental scheme across campus for staff 
  • Website information on active travel options to the campus 
  • Cycle to work scheme for SIF staff 
  • Active staff and wellness initiatives for SIF staff. 

Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, said: “I am delighted to congratulate Sport Ireland Campus on achieving the Smarter Travel Mark at Silver level. The Smarter Travel Mark recognises Sport Ireland Campus as an organisation that prioritises the importance and value of sustainable travel initiatives and the associated environmental benefits.” 

Stephen Bennett, Sport Ireland Campus Operations Manager, said: “At Sport Ireland Campus we prioritise sustainable travel initiatives and the associated environmental benefits. We will implement further Smarter Travel initiatives to support staff and visitors in choosing environmentally-friendly transport options.” 

Looking ahead, we plan to expand green infrastructure on the Sport Ireland Campus. This includes adding more green spaces, improving biodiversity, and building eco-friendly buildings that meet high environmental standards. These efforts aim to create a more sustainable and healthier environment for athletes, staff, and visitors.
