Scully Takes Bronze at Paralympic Swimming World Championships

The medal count continued to rise for Ireland in Montreal Canada, with James Scully winning Bronze at the Paralympic Swimming World Championships.
Scully picked up his first ever International medal in the Final of the 200m Freestyle S6 with a swim of 2 minutes and 58 seconds. He went into the Final in the Bronze medal position in a time of 3:00.17 following this morning heats, the 19 year old then improved this time and maintained the place in the Final finishing behind Roy Perkins (2:45.61) of the USA. World and Paralympic Champion in the event Daniel Dias retained his title in 2 minutes and 27 seconds.
Following the Bronze medal win Scully said "I'm over the moon, it's absolutely brilliant, the time was a bit off what I swam in London but I got the medal and I'm delighted."
Ellen Keane was also in Finals action tonight in both the 50m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley. 18 year old Keane was placed 8th going into the final of the 50m Freestyle following a morning swim of 31.58 but she bettered this time in the afternoon with a new personal best swim of 31.03 to finish 6th overall. She then went on to swim the 200m Individual Medley Final later on but was unable to better her time of 2:47.26 swum in the morning heat clocking 2:47.46 to finish in 6th place.
Head of Paralympic Swimming Dave Malone is excited by the team performance on what is the first step to the Paralympic Games in Brazil in 2016 "We have had a great start to the Championships, it was always going to be a tough meet to come to after the success of London but this is the first year in our Rio cycle and it gives us a good grounding for where we're at and we'll take all the medals that come at us".
Scully, along with Darragh McDonald and Bethany Firth will all be back in the pool tomorrow, Firth in her favoured 100m Backstroke, the event in which she won Gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. On a busy day for Ireland, Limerick's Jonathan McGrath will also take to the pool in the heats of the 400m Freestyle S8.
