SAILING Powerboat Racing in Virginia

  • Cross Border Powerboat Race for Peace and Sport
  • Powerboat Racing in Virginia, Co Cavan on 5th & 6th September 2009

The two day Powerboat Racing event taking place on Lough Ramor, Virginia, Co Cavan (5th & 6th September 2009) will be known as the Cross Border Powerboat Race for Peace and Sport and will incorporate Round 6 of the ISA National Powerboat Racing Championship.

Denis Dillon, ISA Motorboat Development Offficer explained: "Powerboat racing is strictly regulated and as such competitors apply for a licence to race at national or international level. This event is possible because of a special derogation from the UIM, the international governing body for powerboating."

The ISA and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) jointly lodged a submission to the UIM for a special derogation to allow competitors within Ireland to race together on national licences, which had been issued by either the ISA or RYA.

This event was established to promote and develop Powerboat Racing on the island of Ireland and to facilitate cross border co-operation between the ISA and RYA and all their competitors.

This event is recognised by Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based international organisation, which puts sport at the heart of development projects conducted within communities in crisis around the world. A neutral and apolitical initiative, Peace and Sport is based under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Dillon concluded: "We are delighted to be associated with this Race for Peace and Sport. Our aim is that this will become established as an annual event."

The 2009 race will be hosted by the Irish Powerboat Club.
