SAILING Day Two concludes at the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship

Despite the late start and light winds, all races were completed today at the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship at Royal Cork Yacht Club, Crosshaven, Co Cork

Following an initial two hour drift waiting for the wind, the Flight Two competitors successfully completed their three race qualification series. Two slots for Sunday's final series of races were available to Flight Two competitors. The first was convincingly claimed by Paul McMahon, representing the Laser class, when he took first place in all three races. John Driscoll, representing the Squib class, on nine points overall has also qualified, just ahead of Neil Spain (ICRA Division 2) who missed qualification.

Late afternoon saw Flight Three competitors commence their qualification series, as they chased the last three places in tomorrow's finals. Tim Corcoran, representing the GP14 class claimed the first slot, just one point ahead of Colin Chapman (National 18) and David Dwyer (ICRA Division 0) who both have 9 points overall. Michael Duffy, representing the Howth 17 class, just one point behind, will not proceed to the finals despite winning his first race.

  • John Driscoll, Squib Class - Royal North of Ireland YC
  • Ben Duncan, Laser SB3 Class - Howth YC

 

ISA Junior & Girls Sailing Championship

Today saw the start of the ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championship 2009 in the same venue. Sixteen competitors from across the classes competed in the single handed Olympic class Laser Radial dinghy. After a late start following a wait for the wind to fill in, three races were successfully completed. The overnight leader is wild card nominee Matthew O'Dowd (Euro Cup Winner) followed by closely by Conor Lyden (RS Feva) and Mark Condy (Laser 4.7). The top girl sailors are currently in fourth and fifth overall - Diana Kissane (Laser 4.7) and Saskia Tidey who represented Ireland at the ISAF Youth Worlds earlier in the summer.

The Junior & Girls Championship will conclude tomorrow, three more races are scheduled and it is possible for a Girl to take both Junior and Girl trophy.
