ROWING Irish rowing duo miss out on medal coming in fourth

Irish rowing duo, Laura DUrso and Lisa Dilleen just missed out on a medal finishing fourth in the Womens double scull JW2X at the World Junior Rowing Championships in at Brive la Gaillarde, France today.


The Irish crew were neck and neck with the eventual winners over the opening 500 metres and were still in contention for the bronze medal position until they were squeezed into fourth place behind eventual winners Germany, followed by Czech Republic, China and Ireland. The Irish team finished in a time of 7.14.87.


Rowing Ireland coach, Gearid Mitchell, said today, We knew that the opposition, particularly Germany, would be of the highest calibre. Laura and Lisa gave their all today and were unlucky not to medal against strong opposition.


The countries that took part in todays race were Germany, Czech Republic, China, Ireland, Italy and Romania, The six best rowing teams out of pool of twenty one competing countries came through qualifying heats earlier in the week for a place in todays final.


The finals today are the culmination of three days of racing in perfect water conditions.
