Revington Announces Core and Peripheral Squad (men)

06 Dec 2011

Ireland's National Men's Coach Paul Revington has today announced both a core and peripheral squad as Ireland continue their preparation for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament taking place on home soil (UCD, Dublin), from the 10th - 18th March 2012.

Revington who has worked with a large squad over the last 18 months will continue to do so as he names 24 in is core and 22 in his peripheral squad, demonstrating the depth of talent at this level. Revington will base his squad out of Ireland from the 16th -29th January and 4th -12th February 2012 to avail of warm weather training, the details of which are not yet confirmed, and will also have the benefit of hosting a number of international games in the run up to the Dublin Olympic Qualifiers.

Explaining the announcement Coach Paul Revington said "We enter another exciting period as an Ireland Squad on the back of the hard work put in by everyone over the course of the past 18 months. While we are identifying a core and narrowed squad for the coming months, the panel of players in the peripheral squad will still indicate the value we place on building and growing an enlarged Ireland squad as we prepare to tackle the new challenges together in 2012. The core squad is by no means a 'closed squad' and as per previous years there is always scope for players to push their way into selection contention. The period December 2011 to March 2012 will be filled with training and game opportunities for the squad as we prepare to tackle the Olympic Qualifier on home soil together."

The opportunity for Ireland to host this Olympic Qualifier presents both the hockey and wider sporting community their only chance to witness an Olympic Qualifier in Ireland across any sporting discipline. Hosting this event is a huge honour for Irish Hockey and one which has already garnered huge support from the hockey community as the excitement towards this event builds. The qualifiers will take place from 10th - 18th March with Korea, Malaysia, Ireland, Russia, Chile and Ukraine all competing, the tickets for which will go on sale later this week on www.hockey.ie  Irish hockey are also seeking expressions of interest for volunteers for the OQT http://www.hockey.ie/documents/VolunteerForm.doc
