Rás na mBan gets under way with Sport Ireland backing Young Rider classification
Rás na mBan, Ireland’s premier women’s international stage cycling race gets under way today in Co Kilkenny.
Now in its 18th year, the highly anticipated competition features over 100 elite cyclists from across the globe racing across Kilkenny, Laois, and Wexford.
Sport Ireland is again this year supporting the Young Rider classification. The Sport Ireland Young Rider Jersey, a distinctive white jersey, will be granted to the best placed rider under the age of 23 on general classification at the end of each stage.
Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May said: “Sport Ireland is delighted to continue our support for Rás na mBan and the Young Rider classification.
“This year’s competition will bring together riders from 13 different nations, including those who have competed on the world’s most prestigious stages like the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships.
“We look forward to witnessing an exciting event and wish all of the participants the best of luck.”
Rás na mBan Race Director Valerie Considine said: “The support from Sport Ireland in the past four years has been invaluable in shaping the direction of Rás na mBan.
“While we aim to provide an international outlet for Irish bike racers, we also strive to do more than provide a competitive experience. The Sport Ireland Young Riders Classification is a focus to help encourage participation and nurture future generations of bike riders.
“The Young Rider classification is a key part of the race and assists us in promoting women’s cycling in Ireland, showcasing the sport to a broader audience and inspiring the next generation of cyclists.
“We see this event as a key component in making connections between our event and cycling within the wider community.
“On behalf of the race organising committee, I would like to thank Sport Ireland, Cycling Ireland and Ministers Catherine Martin and Thomas Byrne for facilitating this additional support in 2024, which is a testament to their commitment to supporting women’s cycling in Ireland.”
