Ramden and Zhang Take Singles at Carlton Irish Open

07 Dec 2013

Malaysian player Misbun Ramden underlined his huge potential when won the men's singles at the Carlton Irish Badminton Open in Baldoyle beating the German Dieter Domke.

It was the biggest win of his career so far for the young Malaysian, who was delighted with his victory. He dominated the match from the start with a variety of shots from all parts of the court that left the tall German struggling from the start.

By halfway in the opening set, Ramden was leading 11-7 and went on to win the set 21-13. The German came back in the second with the scores even at 4-4 and later at 9-9, but the Ramden always had the edge and pulled away to win 21-18.

When Beiwan Zhang of the USA took only two minutes to hammer seven points past Spain's Beatriz Corrales for only one in reply in the opening set of the women's singles, it looked like the match would be short.

To the great credit of Corrales, she fought back fighting after losing the opening set 9-21, and won the second set 21-17. It was now Zhang's turn to fight back and this she did in style with her whippy smashes doing most of the damage. She went on to take the third set 21-10 and with it the title.

In the mixed mixed doubles, Jacco Arends and Selena Piek of the Netherlands came back from a set down to beat Scottish pair Robert Blair andImogen Banker. Adam Cwalina and Pzemyslaw Wacha of Poland outclassed Dutch pair Jacco Arends and Jelle Maas (Ned) to take the men's doubles, while Selena Piek took a second title when she paired up with Eefje Muskens to beat the Ng sisters from Malaysia in the women's doubles decider.
