PEP Coach Development Weekend

29 May 2010

The second PEP event of the year was held on 14th and 15th May. During the 2 days, the PEP coaches attended workshops on Personal Performance Management and Performance Psychology.

Drawing from his years of experience, Chris Jones, Performance Director for Triathlon Ireland and High Performance Consultant for Athletics Ireland, led the Performance Management workshop, looking at the role and considerations of the Head Coach in high performance sport.

Director of the Institute, Gary Keegan, led discussions on a case study the group had studied on the Chicago Bulls. The case sparked lively debate and a number of diverse learning outcomes on how culture and mind-set, collective and individual, can influence success.

Phil Moore, Institute Director of Performance Science, gave an interactive workshop on Performance Psychology, its theory and practical uses for the high performance coach.

Last but not least, world record holder, adventurer and motivational speaker, Ian McKeever, talked to the coaches about his endeavours to push his own personal performance to the limit through his successful "Seven Summits" World Record challenge.

The Institute would like to thank the guest speakers and PEP coaches for their contributions in making the event a success. Some of the feedback from the workshops is below:

"Great 2 days of very thought provoking discussion. Very useful techniques to take home and put into practice."

"A really enjoyable and informative weekend. I learned a huge amount and was very engaged. It opened my mind to some new ideas and I enjoyed listening to some of the opinions of the other participants."

"An enjoyable experience and very informative."

The theme proposed for the next PEP event is Talent Identification, to be held on 30th September*.

* Please note, only coaches who apply and are accepted onto the PEP are eligible to attend the PEP workshops but we do hold additional workshops for other high performance coaches who work with carded athletes throughout the year as part of the Sparking Performance Programme .
