Sport Ireland welcomes the news that Patrick O’Leary, a two-time Paralympian in paracanoe and a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Athlete Council, has been chosen as an Independent Observer for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May said: “Patrick’s selection reflects our nation's dedication to integrity in sports and the global fight against doping. We want to wish him all the best in Paris.”

WADA's Independent Observer (IO) program aims to bolster confidence in the anti-doping measures at major international events.

The IO teams will oversee and provide feedback on various aspects of the anti-doping programs, ensuring they meet the highest standards.

Patrick will join the IO team in Paris, which includes esteemed professionals from around the world, ensuring a fair competition for all athletes. Their responsibilities include monitoring test distribution, sample collection, and results management, among other critical tasks.

Following the Games, the IO teams will deliver comprehensive reports with recommendations to enhance future anti-doping activities.
