PARTICIPATION 'The Edge Sports' Sandycove Island Challenge 2009

This challenging 1,800 meter swim, is the last major open water swim of the Irish season and will be held on September 19th.

John described the event: "The race attracts an international field of more than 200 competitors - entries open in late July and typically the event is sold out by mid-August".

Organised swimming started at Sandycove Island in the mid 1990s and today it is the centre of Ireland's marathon swimming community with eight English Channel solo swimmers since 2005 and three in the water now hoping for success in the summer.

The Island is also the training location of several hundred other swimmers - from tri-athletes to those getting their first experience of open water.

Simon Worley of The Edge Sports Shop (Cork City) explained: "We have long had a close association with Triathlon so it was a natural extension to sponsor a leading open water swimming event. The land and seascapes around Sandycove Island are unbelievably attractive - but can still present real challenges to the swimmers. This is the kind of event that our customers train for every year"
