PARTICIPATION Lord Mayor Announces Dublin as the European Capital of Sport 2010

05 Oct 2009

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Emer Costello, will be joined by sporting personalities including Bernard Dunne, Katie Taylor, David Gillick and other stars of GAA, Soccer and Rugby to announce the City's appointment as Dublin - European Capital of Sport 2010 to over 200 sporting organisations that operate in Dublin, in City Hall today at 12 noon.

The Lord Mayor will invite sporting, business and tourism organisations to partner with Dublin City Council in celebrating the year. A specially designed logo for the year will be available for interested organisations to use to promote their own events and to encourage people to take part in sporting activities in the city.

"Dublin - European Capital of Sport 2010 is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our achievements as a sporting capital, and to highlight the tremendous amount of work being carried out by thousands of individuals as well as the public, private and voluntary sectors, to enrich the sporting lives of our citizens," said the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Emer Costello.

The appointment of Dublin as next year's European sport capital was made by the internationally renowned European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES) and the mantle will be handed over by the Association and The Lord Mayor of Milan, who currently holds the title, in early February 2010.

"We are developing a website www.dublinsport.ie for 2010 with the aim of making it a one-stop shop for real-time information on the thousands of sporting activities and facilities in the city that people can participate in or go along to watch," says Karl Mitchell, Sport & Active Living Manager, Dublin City Council. "We will be working closely with all of the clubs and organisations to compile detailed information and keep it updated and we encourage them to get involved and let us help them to promote what's happening."

The reason Dublin was chosen by the European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES) is because of:

  • The huge participation by people in Dublin in all levels of sport,
  • The variety of sports on offer in the city and the high level of volunteerism - from local clubs to stadia management.
  • Dublin City Council's partnership approach to sport and recreation
  • The importance Dublin City puts on encouraging all sectors of society to get involved in sport and recreation
