PARTICIPATION An Post Tour de Burren 2010 ready to Kick Off

01 Jun 2010

In 2009, the An Post Tour de Burren attracted 850 cyclists over three leisure distances – 10km , 60km and 160km.  This year, the Tour (part of the An Post Cycle Series), will once again attract a large number, including Sean Kelly and Ian Dempsey,  to this leisure cycle in North Clare on the 19th June.  The three routes will cater for all abilities. Closing date for applications is Friday 11th June.

The 10km Aillwee Cave Family Spin is the ideal route for the family that takes the cyclists from the village of Ballyvaughan to Aillwee Cave and back to the village over a green road. Last year, this had a real ‘Closed Road’ feel to it with the Local Garda Car leading the Peloton. At €2 per cyclists, this is the ideal route for all the family. To celebrate the family spin, Aillwee Cave have decided to let ‘All Kids Go Free’ to its attractions over the weekend.

If you fancy something a bit more challenging, then why  not try the ‘Corkscrew Challenge’. This 60km cycle will take you up the famous Corkscrew Hill, into Lisdoonvarana & Doolin and then hope along the magnificent coastal route of  Fanore / Black Head.  This spin is well worth the challenge. €30

Finally, for the more adventurous, it must be the Burnin’ Burren.  This spin is a diverse 160km spin that takes in several climbs and the towns and villages of North Clare (Bellharbour, Carron, Lisdoonvarna, Kilfenora, Corifin, Ennistymon, Lahinch, Liscannor, Cliffs of Moher, Doolin and back along the coast to Ballyvaughan). €30

As with all the Cycle Series events, the An Post Tour de Burren will be well marshalled and there will also be a number of food and water stops. All entrants will receive a tee-shirt and other goodies.

In 2009, all proceeds from the tour went straight back into sport in County Clare. A number of projects that benefitted were: Disability Sport (SIDO Programme) & Safe Cycling in Schools (Joint initiative with An Taisce, Green Schools).

There will also be an optional BBQ after you finish your spin in Monks Bar. There is a extra cost on this. See the website below for cost in the coming week.
