PARALYMPICS Paralympic Council of Ireland appoints the Sports Science and Medical Personnel for the London 2012 Irish Paralympic Team

The Paralympic Council of Ireland today announced the first appointments in the areas of sports science and medicine to the Irish Paralympic Team for London 2012.  Dr. Joe Conway as Chief Medical Officer has been appointed to lead a multidisciplinary team of sports science and medical service practitioners that will provide essential support to Ireland Paralympic athletes in the build up to and at the 2012 Paralympic Games.


Dr. Conway, also Chief Medical Officer for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Team, heads up the group of experienced staff, many of whom have been working with Irish Paralympic athletes for a number of years. Commenting on the appointments, Dr. Conway said:  “The Sports Science and Medical Team are all delighted to be working with such a hard working and focused group of athletes and management and are excited by the challenge of maximising the preparation of the team for success in London 2012.”


The Sports Science and Medical team will be responsible for delivering ongoing medical support and sports science analysis which will be used to track and support the training and progress of the Irish athletes in preparation for London 2012. The group will also work closely with Waterford Institute of Technology to develop and implement the Irish team’s preparation strategy.


Speaking on the appointment, Chef de Mission for the 2012 Irish Paralympic Team, Liam Harbison said: “I’d like to congratulate the sports science and medical professionals on their appointment to the 2012 Irish Paralympic Team.  The team we have appointed have built up a wealth of experience specific to Paralympic Sport and will further develop strategies to ensure the athletes hit career best performances at the London Games. “

  • Mr. Fintan O’Donnell, Team Physiotherapist, Ennis, Co. Clare
  • Dr. Alan Ringland, Team Sport Psychologist, Ardfert, Co. Kerry
  • Mr. Bruce Wardrop, Team Physiologist, Tramore, Co.  Wateford
  • Ms. Antonia Rossiter, Team Physiologist, Tramore, Co. Waterford
  • Mr Alan Swanton, Team Performance Analyst, Durrus, Co. Cork
