14 Sep 2009

Sports fans can watch Ireland's boxers at the 15th AIBA World Senior Championships in Milan on OB Sport on RTE2 tonight.

The hour long programme, which will be presented by Shane O'Donoghue, begins at 7pm this evening.

John Joe Nevin claimed an historic sixth medal for Ireland at the Championships, winning bronze to bridge an eight year gap since James Moore won bronze at the 2001 World Championships in Belfast.

Nevin was edged out 4-5 by Eduard Abzalimov of Russia in his bantamweight semi final.

But Abzalimov had to settle for silver after he was beaten in the final by Detelin Dalakiev of Bulgaria, who Nevin beat in the Olympic qualifiers in Pescara, Italy last year.

The bantamweight final was refereed by  Irish R&J Michael Gallagher, from Omagh in Tyrone.

Meanwhile, Olympic silver medalist Ken Egan and Willie McLaughlin reached the last eight of the tournament, while Declan Geraghty and Darren O'Neill made it to the last sixteen.

Irish captain Eric Donovan, Paddy Barnes, Con Sheehan, Philip Sutcliffe, Cathal McMonagle and David Oliver Joyce were also in action.

Ireland finished in 12th spot in a medals and points accumulated table from a record breaking 133 nations competing at the Championships.

Russia, Cuba and Uzbekistan, in that order, finished in the top three.

Ireland, Italy, France and Germany were the only western European nations to finish in podium positions in Milan.

The Irish squad also finished in joint 14th spot in the medals table.
