Eoin Mullen Smashes Irish Record in the Sprint Event with 9.965 in the 200m Sprint.

Switzerland based Eoin Mullen has knocked almost a second off the Irish National Record in the 200m Sprint event at the Track Cycling World Cup in Mexico. Generating a speed of 72.252km per hour, the time was 0.7seconds off qualifying for the next round.

The promising young sprinter has been based in Aigle for some time, in the World Cycling Centre, where he is coached by some of the top sprinting coaches in the world. The 20 year old rider from the Aran Islands has been steadily improving since his transition from the Junior ranks to the Senior categories.

In an event that was won by Juan Gascon Peralta (NAV), in a time of 9.633, Mullen's time put him in 23rd place. With 49 starters, this was a super result for the young Irish man, although only the top 16 riders proceeded to the next round. Neiderlag of Germany was Silver, with Japan's Nakagawa in Bronze.

Coach Brian Nugent said "Eoin recorded a very fast time in the 200m Sprint, he came here looking for a new Irish record, and achieved that comfortably, with a great ride. This time it was just outside the top 16, but Eoin is consistently getting faster."

The competition took place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, between January 17th and 19th. Next up is the Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk on 20-24 February.
