National Trails Day - 11 Days to Go

The National Trails Day is a celebration of Ireland's wonderful variety of trails and a chance for everyone to enjoy some of our most beautiful countryside, forests, mountains and lakes. National Trails Day will be held on Sunday, 3rd of October this year and it is hoped that this year's event will be even bigger and better than last year with more events being organised on trails around the country.

East Coast & Midlands

  • Event: Rossmore Woods Nature Walk, Co Carlow
    Description: Follow this little known walking trail which encircles the old Rossmore coalmine bringing you through the forest back to your starting point.
  • Event: Family Fun Cycle, Emo Court, Co. Laois
    Description: Famil Cycle Event
  • Event: Guided Heritage Walk, Cullahill, Co. Laois
    Description: A ramble along old Mass paths with stories from the past. An opportunity to enjoy this recently launched Failte Ireland Loop.
  • Event: Canoe Event, Barton Hills, Co. Laois
    Description:Fun on the river at the old mills river trail.
  • Event: Guided Eco Walk, Cadamstown, Co. Offaly
    Description: Walkers can experience the wonderful flora and fauna of the Slieve Blooms while on this guided eco walk.
  • Event: Avoca Tresuare Hunt Trail, Co. Wicklow
    Description: Fun for all the family.

 


 

South East

  • Event: Exploring The Gap nature and landscape, Nire Valley, Co. Waterford
    Description: Guided by Ballymacarbry local Michael Maunsell, this walk is from the Nire Valley carpark to Rathgormack Village. It is a delightful low-level mountain walk suitable for familes with older children. Once in Rathgormack you will be rewarded with a well earned cup of tea and a lift back to your car in the Nire Valley.
  • Event: Lough Mohra Loop, Rathgormack, Co. Waterford
    Description: Hosted by Rathgormack Rambler's Michael O'Donoghue, this family friendly walk will be both entertaining and informative.
  • Event: Rossmore Woods Nature Walk, Co. Carlow

South West

  • Event: Coillte Forest Park Farran, Co Cork
    Description: Forest Nature walk around the wildlife enclosure and surrounding area. Orienteering event following permanent orienteering course laid down at Coillte Forest Park Farran.
  • Event: Walk on the Wild Side, Glenbar Woods, Co. Cork
    Description: At 2 PM a wildlife ranger will join us for a guided walk in Glenbower wood.
  • Event: Ballincollig Regional Park, Co Cork
    Description: Family Walk followed by orienteering
  • Event: Walk in wild landscape of 'the Kerry Highlands', Kerry Way, Glencar, Co. Kerr
    Description: Walk on the Kerry Way trail from Blackstones Bridge/Lickeen Wood, along/close to the Caragh River. Finish point: Glencar PO/Climbers Inn. Distance 3.75 miles/6km. Terrain: forest roads, wood path, river bank, green road.

 


 

West

  • Event: The Suck Valley Way Walk & Talk, Co. Galway
    Description: Walk 10km from Ballymoe to Glinsk viewing a beautiful scenic landscape, that includes country lanes, bog tracks, farm land, rivers, lakes as well as history and wildlife. On arrival at Glinsk Heritage Park (near Glinks Castle) Glinsk Community /Heritage Group will provide free refeshments to each walker and afterwards you can list to a short talk on the history of Glinsk Castle. Nothing to pay for, coach, food & drink all FREE. If you are interested, book your seat on the coach by contacting Martin Dunne as soon as possible by e-mail or phone. The bus will be leaving Glinsk promptly at 10.00 am
  • Event: Inishbofin Island west end loop walk, Co. Galway
    Description: Guided west end loop walk of Inishbofin Island with stunning Atlantic views, Island history & Folklore.
  • Event: Come and try it with the Moy Canoe Club, Ballina, Co. Mayo
    Description: Join the members of the moy canoe club on the water and experience the freedom and joy of canoeing.
  • Event: Great Western Greenway, Mulranny, Co. Mayo
    Description: This will be a mountain bike spin along a section of the Great Western Greenway and onto the off-road tracks in the lower reaches of the Nephin mountains.
  • Event: Rinn Duin Wood Nature Trail, Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon
    Description: Rebecca Dobson from NPWS will be taking three separate groups into one of Ireland's best preserved medieval woods to identify different trees, plants, flowers etc . After the walk walkers can finish off by completing the trail through the deserted norman town passing the castle, townwall, hospital, graveyards and churches.

 


 

North West

  • Event: Miners' Way & Historical Trail through Moytura, Highwood, Co. Sligo
    Description: From Ballyfarnon the walk moves slowly uphill and affords panoramic views of Lough Skean & Kilronan Mountain. At Highwood there is a wealth of ancient archaeology (Battle of Moytura, tombs, cairns, dolmen) as well as the beautiful vista of Lough Arrow and Carrowkeel while to the North West can be seen Nephin, Knocknarea, Benbulben, etc.
  • Event: The Big Ramble, Dunfanaght, Co. Donegal
    Description: The big ramble will take you through the stunning natural landscapes of Horn head. Through a forest, nature reserve, sand dunes and the new lake to the most stunning beach in Ireland. You will see incredible views of Tory Ireland and the impressive geology of Mcswynees Gun. A walk that has something exciting for everyone and a BBQ to finish up the day
  • Event: Siْlَid timpeall lochanna an oileلin - Looped walk around Island lakes, Arranmore Island, Co . Donegal
    Description: Siْlَid dْlra le radhairc لite trيd bَithre na cnoic agus timpeall lochanna an oileلin - Nature walk with scenic views through the mountain roads and around the Island lakes.
  • Event: Walk the Hamilton Trail, Killashandra, Co. Cavan
    Description: Join local experts for a walk along the Hamilton Trail, part of the National Looped Walks network. Situated within the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, this walk takes you through the scenic glacial landscapes around Killeshandra before entering the beautful mixed woodland, that was part of the old Hamilton estate.
