Murphy 12th In 50m Breaststroke Semi-Final At European Championships

Ireland's Barry Murphy has finished 12th in the 50m Breaststroke semi-final at the European Championships in Berlin missing out on the Final by just two tenths of a second in an event where a new World Record was set by Great Britain's Adam Peaty.

Murphy had qualified for tonight's semi-final in 14th place in 28.01 seconds, the 28 year old managed to better this time in the semi-final in a season's best 27.90 but this was not enough to secure a place in the Final with Germany's Hendrik Feldwehr claiming the last Final spot in 27.70.

A disappointed Murphy commented after the race "The race didn't feel great, I think it was a reflection of my form, I know when I'm swimming well and I know when something's off and this week it's just not quite clicked for me. It is disappointing but that's sport, I underperformed this week and it's hard to finish the season like that but I'm looking forward to bouncing back".

Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Adam Peaty broke the World Record in the event, held by South Africa's Cameron Van Der Burgh since 2009, winning the second heat in 26.62 seconds. Serbia's Caba Siladji won heat 1 in 27.33.

Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle return to the pool for the 50m Breaststroke Heats tomorrow. McMahon, a Silver medallist at the 2012 European Championships in Hungary and Doyle are both currently ranked in the top 16 for the event and they should be confident of making tomorrow evening's semi-finals.

McMahon will also be in action in the 200m Butterfly heats and Dan Sweeney will swim his final event in the 50m Freestyle heats.
